Is the Zotye Domy X7 a handsomer VW Atlas?

VW Atlas versus Zotye Domy X7

Chinese copycat design may actually have improved on the original in this case

This Zotye Domy X7 was spotted in the wild by sharp-eyed Imgur user memostothefuture. We’re guessing, like us, his first thought was, “Is that a VW Atlas?” But it’s not. Instead, it’s a very good-looking Chinese knockoff, and dammit if it doesn’t present better than the official new seven-seater from Volkswagen.
The front end of the X7 uses a darker grille than the VW, and the chrome bars sort of wrap around the headlights, which is a good look. The intakes are cooler, too. Where VW has standard-looking fog lights integrated into the bumper, the Domy has LED bars, and the chin spoiler looks better.
VW versus Domy rear
The rear is very similar as well, but the Domy affixes reflectors and hides the tailpipes. Both have L-shaped taillights, but the VW’s are obscured by the chrome trim.
If you have time, check out Zotye’s website, but double-check your virus protection first. Zotye has cars like the T600 with “outstanding look, extraordinary interior and surging power.” The Z300, on the other hand, has “grand appearance, big space and efficient power.” Translations are funny.
At any rate, it looks like unfortunately named Chinese brand Trumpchi will head to our shores first. But surely that Zotye Domy X7 would look right at home on Route 66 -- or a mall parking lot in Los Angeles.
